Hansberry Garden:

Plant Sale

Philadelphia, Pa. — April 11, 2018 — Beautiful, hardy native species will be among the plants offered at Hansberry Garden and Nature Center’s spring plant sale on Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 5150 Wayne Ave. (at the corner of Wayne and Hansberry) in Southwest Germantown.

The Plant Sale will offer annual and perennial flowers, vegetable plants and herbs. Featured are native species, which play a critical role in keeping our ecosystem healthy.

Also, just in time for Mother’s Day, HGNC will be offering Mother’s Day Gift Baskets with an assortment of lovely garden-related items in decorated baskets.

Food and drinks will be offered to shoppers, who are welcome to tour the garden.

Those who are interested in joining the garden

Membership in Hansberry Garden and Nature Center offers much more than farming an eight-by-four-foot plot of fertile land. HGNC is a beautiful, welcoming environment for forging real connections with your Germantown neighbors. Attend our Spring Gathering to learn more about how HGNC members share expertise, labor, and good times — as well as more tangible items like seeds, tools, and produce.

The Hansberry Garden and Nature Center (HGNC) operates an organic garden at the corner of Wayne and Hansberry Avenues. HGNC also sponsors a number of community activities including the Kelly Green Project, a partnership with the nearby John B. Kelly School; a Farm Stand that offers produce to the community at low or no cost during the growing season; regular donations of produce to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s City Harvest Program; and programming such as workshops and social gatherings, both for garden members and for the general public.

For more information about Hansberry Garden and Nature Center, see the HGNC website at http://www.hansberrygarden.org.

Friends of Cloverly/The Old Tennis Court Community Garden

The Old Tennis Court Farm community garden, located on the 5400 block of Wissahickon Avenue in Germantown, has plots available for the 2018 garden season and is now welcoming new members.

Full-sized plots (12 feet x 12 feet) are $40 for the season. A few half-plots (12 feet x 6 feet) are available for $20 for the season. Those new to gardening can tap the expertise of more seasoned members.

The Old Tennis Court Farm operates as a collaborative effort: in addition to caring for their own plots, members share in the upkeep of the garden as whole, including a set of community benefit plots whose harvest is donated to local organizations that provide food to those in need.

The Old Tennis Court Farm is an affiliate of Neighborhood Gardens Trust (www.ngtrust.org). For more information about becoming a member of the Old Tennis Court Farm, use the contact form at www.oldtenniscourtfarm.org.

Urban Resources Development Corporation

The Housing Rehabilitation Program purchases abandoned and foreclosed houses in Germantown, Mt. Airy, and the surrounding neighborhoods, renovates them, and then sells the houses to low and moderate income, first- time home buyers.  URDC usually purchases houses in stable neighborhoods where a dilapidated or abandoned house causes concerns for the neighbors.  Since its inception, URDC has renovated and sold over 30 houses in the northwest part of the city.
